Shipping a Luxury or Exotic Car for the First Time? Here's What Sets It Apart

Shipping a luxury or exotic vehicle isn't like shipping a standard car. Here's what owners need to know to do it right.

You've spent years — maybe decades — building toward a car like this. A Porsche 911, a Ferrari, a pristine Mercedes S-Class, or a custom-built muscle car worth more than most people's mortgages. Now you need to move it across the country, and the stakes feel different.

They are different. Here's what separates a smart luxury-vehicle shipment from one you'll regret.

Why Standard Shipping Advice Doesn't Fully Apply

Most car-shipping guidance is written with everyday vehicles in mind — a Honda Accord, a Ford F-150. The fundamentals carry over, but several details matter much more when your vehicle is worth $80,000, $200,000, or more.

The margin for error shrinks. A door ding on a Camry is an annoyance. The same ding on a low-production exotic can mean thousands in specialized bodywork and a measurable drop in resale value. Every step of the process deserves more scrutiny.

Enclosed Transport Isn't Optional — It's the Starting Point

Open carriers are fine for most vehicles. For a luxury or exotic car, enclosed transport is the baseline, not an upgrade.

Why it matters:

  • Road debris. Rocks, gravel, and road grit thrown from other vehicles can chip paint or crack a front splitter on a low-clearance car.
  • Weather exposure. Rain, hail, UV rays, and temperature swings affect paint, leather, and soft-top convertibles in ways that add up over a multi-day haul.
  • Visibility. An open carrier advertises what it's carrying. An enclosed trailer does not.
  • Handling. Enclosed carriers typically carry fewer vehicles, meaning more careful loading and less jostling in transit.

Yes, enclosed transport costs more — usually 30–60% above open rates for the same route. On a vehicle worth six figures, that premium is money well spent.

Insurance: Know What You're Actually Covered For

Every licensed carrier is required to carry cargo insurance. The question is whether their policy limit actually covers your vehicle's value.

Many standard carrier policies top out well below what a high-end exotic is worth. Before you book with anyone, ask directly:

  1. What is your cargo insurance limit per vehicle?
  2. Is my car covered for its full replacement value or its depreciated book value?
  3. Do you carry any supplemental coverage for high-value vehicles?

At Dreamline Logistics, cargo is insured up to $750,000, which covers the overwhelming majority of luxury and exotic vehicles we transport. If your car exceeds that threshold, talk to your personal auto insurer about a rider for the transit period — most will accommodate it.

Low-Clearance and Wide-Body Vehicles Need Special Attention

Not every enclosed trailer is set up the same way. Some use lift gates; others use ramps with specific incline angles. If your vehicle sits very low — think Lamborghini Huracán, Porsche 718 Spyder, or a heavily lowered build — the loading and unloading process needs to be discussed before booking.

Ask your carrier:

  • What is your minimum ground clearance for loading?
  • Do you carry ramp extenders or ground-clearance boards?
  • Have you transported this make and model before?

A carrier who answers these questions confidently and specifically has done this before. Vague answers are a signal to keep shopping.

The Condition Report Is Your Paper Trail

Before your car leaves, a Bill of Lading (BOL) is completed. This document records the vehicle's existing condition — every scratch, chip, and scuff — with the driver's signature.

Do not let your car be loaded until you have walked the vehicle together with the driver and both parties have signed the condition report. Photograph every panel, the undercarriage, the wheels, and the interior.

This isn't paranoia. It's the only documentation that protects you if a dispute arises at delivery. For a standard vehicle, skipping this step is careless. For a luxury or exotic car, it's a serious mistake.

Choosing the Right Partner Matters More at This Level

Shipping a $15,000 commuter car through a discount broker you found on a comparison site carries some risk. Shipping a $250,000 GT3 RS through the same process carries a lot more.

Look for a company that:

  • Specializes in or has documented experience with high-value vehicles
  • Offers enclosed-only options, not just enclosed as an add-on
  • Carries insurance limits that match your vehicle's value
  • Communicates clearly about timelines, driver assignments, and route planning
  • Gives you a real person to call — not just a tracking link
