Shipping a Car With an Expired Registration or Out-of-State Plates? Here's What Actually Matters

Expired tags or out-of-state plates shouldn't derail your car shipment. Here's what carriers actually require—and what you can ignore.

You found a carrier, got a good rate, and then someone asks: Is the registration current? Maybe it lapsed. Maybe the plates are from another state entirely. Suddenly a straightforward shipment feels complicated.

Take a breath. This situation is more common than you think, and in most cases it is not the obstacle it appears to be. Here is what actually matters when you ship a car with expired registration or out-of-state plates.

The Short Answer: Carriers Don't Drive Your Car on Public Roads

This is the key fact most people miss. When an auto transport company moves your vehicle, it rides on a carrier truck — it is not driven from your driveway to the destination. That means your car does not need to be street-legal in the traditional sense for the transport itself.

No one is pulling your vehicle over on I-80. No cop is running the plates on a car strapped to a transporter. The registration requirements that govern you as a driver simply do not apply to a car being hauled.

What Carriers Actually Check

Legitimate carriers care about a few practical things:

  • Can the car be loaded and unloaded? If it runs and steers, great. If it does not run, that is a separate conversation (non-running vehicles require special equipment), but expired tags are irrelevant.
  • Is there a valid owner or authorized representative? Someone needs to sign the Bill of Lading at pickup and delivery. That person should be able to confirm they have the right to release and accept the vehicle.
  • Is the vehicle insured during transport? Cargo insurance covers the vehicle while it is on the carrier. At Dreamline Logistics, cargo is insured up to $750,000, so your car is protected regardless of its plate status.

That is essentially the list. Registration expiration does not appear on it.

When Out-of-State Plates Do Matter — Just Not for Shipping

Here is where people sometimes confuse two separate issues. Shipping the car is one thing. What happens after it arrives is another.

If you are relocating to a new state, most states give you 30 to 90 days after establishing residency to re-register the vehicle with local plates. That clock starts when you move, not when the car arrives. Check your destination state's DMV website for the exact window — it varies.

If the registration is expired and you plan to drive the car after delivery, you will need to sort that out before you hit the road. But again, that has nothing to do with the shipping process itself.

A Few Edge Cases Worth Knowing

The Car Is in Someone Else's Name

If you are shipping a vehicle you recently purchased but have not yet titled in your name, bring your bill of sale. Carriers and their insurers want to confirm you have a legitimate claim to the vehicle. A bill of sale from a private seller or dealer is typically sufficient.

You Are Shipping Across State Lines Before Re-Titling

This happens often with estate vehicles, recent private-party purchases, or gifts. As long as you have documentation showing a valid transaction, most carriers will proceed without issue. Call ahead and be transparent — there is no reason to hide it, and a good broker will tell you exactly what paperwork to have ready.

The Registration Is Expired AND the Car Does Not Run

Now you have two separate variables, but neither one automatically blocks the shipment. Non-running vehicles ship regularly; they just require a carrier with a winch or ramp system and typically cost a bit more. Expired registration still plays no role.

What to Do Before You Book

  1. Gather your documentation. Title or bill of sale, your ID, and any lien release if a lender was involved.
  2. Be upfront with your carrier or broker. Mention the plate situation when you call. A trustworthy company — not just one chasing the cheapest rate — will confirm what they need and move forward confidently.
  3. Plan your post-delivery steps. If you are moving states, look up your new state's re-registration window now so it is not a surprise later.
